Mayors' mission to explore Games opportunities
Scenic Rim Mayor Tom Sharp will join counterparts from the Council of Mayors South East Queensland (CoMSEQ) on an international mission next month to explore 2032 Games opportunities.
Council's representative on the CoMSEQ Leveraging 2032 Working Group, Cr Sharp will visit Manchester in the United Kingdom and Paris in France which, respectively, hosted the most recent Commonwealth Games and Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Funded by CoMSEQ, the mission will also include a brief visit to Singapore where delegates will tour landmark recreation areas and explore waste to energy, water reclamation and urban development.
There will also be opportunities for strategic engagement with a technology company and computer systems group as well as a diplomatic reception.
Cr Sharp said the mission represented a valuable opportunity for the Scenic Rim as it continues its campaign to host the rowing and canoeing events in Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"CoMSEQ played a key role in South East Queensland's bid for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and has had ongoing involvement in planning and preparations for the Games," he said.
"As the home of Queensland's State Rowing Centre, Lake Wyaralong has long been considered a front runner for the rowing and canoeing events and I believe the Scenic Rim is well placed to host these sports.
"Next month's mission to the United Kingdom and France is about maximising our Games opportunities and showcasing our region."
Australia's largest advocacy organisation, CoMSEQ represents the one in seven Australians who have made South East Queensland their home.
"As Scenic Rim's representative on CoMSEQ's Waste Working Group, I will also be interested to see Singapore's innovative waste-to-energy initiatives and how these might be applied in our region," Cr Sharp said.
