One Million Trees

Council's flagship environmental program, the One Million Trees initiative was established in 2012 with the goal of planting a million plants across the region by 2025.

With the aim of creating a lasting legacy by enhancing the Scenic Rim's spectacular scenery and natural environment, the One Million Trees program includes the Rural Trees Initiative, River Trees Initiative, Habitat Trees Initiative and Community Trees Initiative.

Rural landholders face continued land management issues due to extreme weather, production pressures and land degradation.

The Rural Trees Initiative can assist by providing native trees to address issues such as soil salinity, land degradation, erosion and soil stability as well as providing shade for livestock and wind breaks. Rural land managers can benefit in many ways with the inclusion of strategic vegetated areas on their properties.

What Do You Receive?

Participants can apply for up to 1,000 native plants and trees, as tubestock, from a selection of species tailored to their needs, subject to availability.

River trees initiative

Waterways are important for our economy and environment. Native vegetation plays a crucial role in ensuring our waterways remain healthy, reducing the impacts of flooding and providing habitat for native plants and animals.

The River Trees Initiative helps landholders, whose properties border waterways, by providing native plants and trees to build resilience against the threats to these natural systems. The propagation of native plants and trees can assist in addressing streambank stability, land degradation and erosion, providing improved water quality for our communities and the environment. The benefits of healthy Scenic Rim waterways literally flow on to communities downstream and, ultimately, Moreton Bay.

Habitat trees

Community trees

Green spaces are at the heart of liveable communities. Supporting schools, clubs, and community groups, the Community Trees Initiative enables community groups to get involved in restoring or enhancing areas by planting native trees and plants in key areas.

The initiative can assist community groups in enhancing local reserves, sporting areas, parks, and club and school grounds through a group planting event.

How To Apply

Use the One Million Trees Application Form to apply for any of the above initiatives. You can apply for whatever number you want at the time (for example, 20, 50 or 200 or if doing a big project up to 1000 each year) and reapply once you have planted.

Once you submit the application form, and are successful you receive a plant voucher. Details on the voucher will be provided on where to collect the tubestock from for your project: Current nurseries are located for collection at: Kalbar, Beaudesert or Tamborine Mountain.

Don't worry if you don't know what plants you need to plant for your project - we can help you with this. As long as you indicate what sort of project you want we can help with species selection.
