New policy provides the complete picture on the use of recording devices
Scenic Rim Regional Council's policy on the use of body-worn cameras by staff has been extended to include all recording devices used across the organisation in its interactions with the community.
The new Recording Device Operation and Management Policy, adopted at today's Ordinary Meeting, recognises the capture of images, audio and video in addition to those of body-worn cameras by Council staff and contractors in the course of their duties.
It covers phones, surveillance cameras and other recording devices and takes into account advances in technology, including the use of drones and software such as Teams, since the introduction of the Body-Worn Camera Policy which was last reviewed in 2019.
Scenic Rim Mayor Tom Sharp said the use of recording devices by Council aimed to promote public safety and minimise the potential for threats to members of the public and Council staff, minimise theft or damage to Council assets and the associated cost to the community and manage the collection of audiovisual evidence.
"Importantly, this policy recognises the privacy of individuals as far as possible and reflects Council's commitment to openness and transparency in its dealings with the community," he said.
"With a focus on the protection and inclusion of privacy and human rights provisions, and storage and access to records, the policy reflects the need continue to take account of the changing social and technological landscape."
