Bin Health Checks

Starting May 2025, Council will be rolling out Bin Health Checks across the region. You might spot members of our team in your neighbourhood performing simple visual checks of bins before collection.

What is a Bin Health Check?

A bin health check is a quick visual check of your kerbside bins, no rummaging, no fines.

We simply lift the lid, have a look, and apply a green or red tag to give you feedback on your recycling efforts.

The data we collect as part of the program will be used by Council to further develop future waste and resource recovery education to provide long-term and sustainable solutions for our region.

Bin Stickers

To encourage better bin habits, we are also using bin lid stickers.

Our waste truck drivers have CCTV cameras that allow them to see the contents of each bin as it is emptied. If they spot an issue, such as a bin filled with wrong items or that is to heavy, they will place a sticker on the lid.

Don't worry, this is a good thing! The sticker helps you to understand what went wrong so you can make improvements next time.

Why It Matters

Recent bin audits found:

More than 15% of items in general waste bins could have been recycled.

Around 25% of items in the recycling bins weren't recyclable.

Some of these items belong in general waste, while others should not go in any bin at all, they require special disposal at a Waste and Resource Recovery Facility.

Sorting your waste properly:

Boosts recycling and resource recovery.

Builds a stronger local circular economy.

Helps us all work toward zero waste landfill.
