Council crews assessing flood damaged roads

Scenic Rim Regional Council is urging drivers to go steady on the region's roads over the remaining January holiday period, after recent flooding and continued summer rains that may have impacted road surfaces.

Council crews have been out and about inspecting and assessing the damage to prioritise works needed to repair the damage across our vast road network. 

Council is eligible to apply for funding through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority for damages caused by a natural disaster event.

"We know it is frustrating for drivers as well as our diverse agricultural industries," Mayor Greg Christensen said.

"Emergency works are being completed and our crews have now begun inspecting and assessing the extent of damage across the region in order to present our case for funding to complete the more advanced works needed to repair and improve our roads."

Some of the worst hit areas during floods in December included the areas of Mt. Alford, Crosby, Milford, Tarome, Rosevale, Carney's Creek, Sarabah, Flying Fox, Illinbah, Palen Creek, Rathdowney, Kooralbyn, Allenview, Beaudesert, Gleneagle, Barney View, Lamington, Christmas Creek, Running Creek, and Laravale.

"This natural disaster funding opportunity including the consideration and allocation of funds will take a few months, so I would urge people to be patient, with the knowledge that we are working through it.

“Right across our region our roads are being impacted, and our crews are working as hard as they can to fix them.

“It is crucial for people to remember that our wet season is not over yet.

“The message is take it easy out there on the roads, and remember, if they're flooded, forget it."

Council’s allocation of $27.1 million to the Scenic Rim’s road and bridge network in 2021-2022 represents an ongoing investment in a well-maintained, safe and interconnected transport network. 

Scenic Rim Regional Council is responsible for 963 kilometres of sealed and 793 kilometres of unsealed roads in the region with its budget supplemented by State and Federal grants.
