Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen has congratulated former Tamborine Mountain RSL Sub-Branch President John Brookes on his award in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours.

Mr Brookes, who was the sub-branch president for 15 years from 2000, was awarded the OAM in the General Division for his service to veterans and their families.

"It's wonderful to see outstanding members of our Scenic Rim community recognised in this way," Cr Christensen said.

"Mr Brookes was a driving force in the establishment of Tamborine Mountain's war memorial, from its planning to its ultimate completion with the addition of two bench seats to commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC in 2015.

"He has passed on the torch of remembrance to a new generation, having introduced the RSL to schools' ANZAC Day commemorations on Tamborine Mountain and been a staunch supporter of veterans and their families through years of dedicated volunteer service.

"Mr Brookes has set a great example of service to others and has shown what a difference people can make to the life of our Scenic Rim communities."
