Fire Management a Hot Topic at Free Sausage Sizzle

Scenic Rim landholders are invited to a free sausage sizzle and workshop next month, where fire management will be a hot topic of discussion.

Council is partnering with the South East Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium (SEQFBC) to present an information night and workshop at Canungra to educate landholders about managing fire, with a focus on individual properties.

Landholders are invited to attend a free information night and sausage sizzle on Tuesday 24 July from 6pm to 9pm at the Canungra State School Hall. There, representatives from SEQFBC, Scenic Rim Regional Council, Rural Fire Service Queensland and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services will share information about their roles and offer advice about planning for the approaching fire season, local laws, vegetation management, and the conservation of plants and animals.

Registration is essential for the free workshop to be held the following day from 8:30am to 4pm on Wednesday 25 July at the Canungra School of Arts Hall. This workshop, which includes morning tea and lunch, will help landholders who attended the information night to form personalised fire management plans for their own properties while receiving assistance and advice from key speakers regarding safe and practical planning and strategies.

Mayor Greg Christensen encouraged property owners to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge available to them during the workshop and suggested to residents that working together is a great starting point.

"We've all heard the phrase 'What's your what if plan?' and this is the perfect opportunity to learn from others who can help to form a plan that's right for you and your property in the lead-up to and during fire season," he said.

"We can learn a lot from each other by sharing our experiences and knowledge and this event will be a great networking opportunity for our region's property owners and industry representatives."

There is no need to RSVP for the initial information night. However, as workshop attendees will receive a personalised map of the property for which they wish to develop a Fire Management Plan, it is essential to RSVP by close of business Wednesday 18 July.
