Container Refund Scheme Begins Its Roll-Out

Canungra and Bromelton will be the first Scenic Rim collection points as the roll-out of the Containers for Change refund scheme begins on Thursday 1 November.

While the State Government's Container Refund Scheme aims to reduce the volume of litter in the environment by providing an incentive for the collection and return of approved containers, Mayor Greg Christensen said Council was yet to be fully advised by the contractors of the operation of the scheme in the Scenic Rim.

"The contractors who were appointed by the State Government have advised that they will operate a mobile container collection service only from 9am to noon on Thursdays beginning 1 November at Council's Central Landfill at Bromelton and on Wednesdays from 7 November from 9am to noon at the Canungra Waste Transfer Station with further detail to come," he said.

"The process of identifying providers for the Containers for Change program has been run by the State Government which has led to the Peace Lutheran Church at Gatton, trading as Anuha, and Re.Turn It being the contractors for our region.

"At this stage they have not provided Council with detail to undertake Containers for Change collection points at Boonah or Tamborine Mountain."

Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard beverage containers between 150 millilitres and three litres - preferably with the lids removed - are eligible for a 10 cent refund when returned to a nominated container refund point.

"It's important that Scenic Rim residents, who are champions when it comes to recycling, continue to recycle containers such as plain milk bottles and glass wine bottles - that are not eligible under the refund scheme - through existing kerbside collection or drop-off points at our waste transfer stations," Cr Christensen said.

Council has been advised that residents wishing to participate in the Containers for Change refund scheme will need to register by visiting www.containersforchange.com.au and creating an account so that their refund payments can be processed via an electronic funds transfer into their bank account as there will be no cash at collection points.

"Residents who do not wish to participate in the program should continue to recycle their containers as normal, as we will continue to maintain our recycling solutions for glass and plastic to ensure this does not become problematic for our community," Cr Christensen said.
