NEW AUSTRALIANS WELCOMED IN QUEENSLAND DAY CELEBRATIONS
Queensland's birthday celebrations provided a timely opportunity to formally embrace 29 Scenic Rim residents as new Australians in a citizenship ceremony.
The number of new citizens taking part in the Queensland Day Citizenship Ceremony doubled in 2019, the second year in which Scenic Rim Regional Council has included its event to the family fun day.
Beaudesert's Jubilee Park took on a carnival atmosphere on Sunday 2 June, with market stalls, and free activities for all ages.
Mayor Greg Christensen said combining the citizenship ceremony and the Queensland Day celebrations in the park made a great day out for all.
"It was a privilege to play a part in formally embracing these local residents as our newest Australians," he said.
"The atmosphere for this significant moment was greatly enhanced by the presence of our community organisations which, in many ways, represent the fabric of Australia."
This year, marks Queensland 160th birthday under the Queensland Government's banner of Celebrate One Six O.
"Scenic Rim Regional Council is grateful for the Queensland Government's sponsorship of our Queensland Day event which helped to make our family fun day so successful," Cr Christensen said.
"In celebrating this day, we share a sense of pride in being both Australians and Queenslanders.
"It's a time for us to reflect on how lucky we are to be part of such a wonderful, diverse state and to live in the Scenic Rim which is the best place in Australia."
Council's 'One Six O' Queensland Day celebrations will continue throughout the week with bingo parties at Boonah Cultural Centre on Wednesday 5 June and at the Vonda Youngman Centre, Tamborine Mountain on Thursday 6 June.
These bingo sessions are open to the entire community and will run from 10am until 11:30am with a free morning tea.
Queensland Day on 6 June marks the day in 1859 that Queen Victoria signed the letters patent proclaiming Queensland as a separate colony from New South Wales.
