Reserve to recognise Beechmont pioneers

A large tract of public reserve in Beechmont is to be named in recognition of the district's pioneers.

The unnamed parcel of land, known locally as Back Creek Reserve, bounds Graceleigh Park and Beechmont State School, and follows the course of the creek behind neighbouring homes.

Corporate and Community Services Committee chair Cr Virginia West said the official name 'Beechmont Pioneer Reserve' had been selected following a submission by the Beechmont District Landcare Association.

"This naming recognises the pioneering families who first settled the Beechmont area and their descendants who are proud of the contribution their forebears made in establishing the community," she said.

"It will also provide an enhanced community focus on this reserve where Landcare members are engaged with local residents and the neighbouring school community on revegetation projects."

Cr West said Council had invited the community to submit alternative names as part of the public notification process but no suggestions were received.
