A sign of the times

As the countdown continues to the federal election on Saturday 3 May, Scenic Rim Regional Council is reminding all candidates and campaign teams of the rules surrounding the display of election signage across the region.
Under Council’s Local Laws and Department of Transport and Main Roads requirements, election signage must meet specific guidelines to ensure public and road safety.
Mayor Tom Sharp said Council supports open and fair communication during election campaigns, however community safety must be a priority.
“Council welcomes healthy democratic engagement and we want to ensure all candidates can get their message out,” Cr Sharp said.
“At the same time, it’s important that any election signage is displayed safely, lawfully and respectfully, particularly in high-traffic or public areas.”
Candidates are reminded that an application must be lodged and approved before erecting any campaign-related placards.
Signs placed on roads, including road reserves, must not pose any risk to public health or safety or road safety and must not exceed 0.54m², unless they are part of an approved advertisement.
Signage on private property is permitted with the owner's consent, but the same size and safety restrictions apply.
Promotional political campaign materials are strictly prohibited on Council-owned property or assets and will be removed by Council without notice.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads has authorised Council to control election signage on a number of state-controlled roads in the Scenic Rim including the Mount Lindesay Highway, Tamborine Mountain Road and Beaudesert-Nerang Road.
Election signage on vehicles is not regulated by Council, however vehicles with election signage must be parked in accordance with the Queensland Road Rules.
Any displays found in unsafe or non-compliant locations may be removed by Council officers without prior notice, and release fees may apply.
For full guidelines, and to submit an application for election signage approval, candidates should view Council's website scenicrim.qld.gov.au/downloads/file/5079/election-signage-fact-sheet or contact Council’s Compliance Services team on 5540 5111.
