Mayor Tom Sharp has been appointed Scenic Rim's representative to a group of councils working together to deliver long-term waste management solutions for South East Queensland.

At Council's Ordinary Meeting today, Cr Sharp was appointed to represent the Scenic Rim on the Council of Mayors South East Queensland Waste Working Group for the remainder of the Council term.

Cr Sharp said Council's membership of the waste working group underscored the Scenic Rim's commitment to achieving a zero-waste future.

"In line with our Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 2021-2026, we are committed to minimising the impact of waste on the environment while maximising economic opportunities through recycling and resource recovery," he said.

"Our community-based education programs continue to raise awareness of how everyone can play a part in reducing the amount of waste - and valuable material - finding its way to landfill.

“Over the past couple of years there has been a noticeable reduction in the volume of recyclable materials being disposed of in household general waste bins.”

The Council of Mayors South East Queensland Waste Working Group enables regional collaboration and information sharing between councils to support both the Queensland Government's SEQ Waste Management Plan and its Recycling and Jobs Fund.

"As councils, we have a shared goal of ensuring the liveability of South East Queensland and protecting our environment for future generations," Cr Sharp said.
