Council approves Gallery Walk land sale

Surplus land acquired by Scenic Rim Regional Council as part of its planning for improvements to Tamborine Mountain's popular Gallery Walk precinct is set to be sold following a decision at today's Ordinary Meeting.
The property on Long Road was purchased by Council in 2022 with the aim of creating up to 160 car parks and improved pedestrian access, subdividing surplus land for development and selling the commercial buildings which are currently trading as the Mount Tamborine Vineyard and Winery.
Mayor Greg Christensen said the disposal of the surplus land aimed to reduce the overall cost of acquiring the property, which was part funded through a two-year loan of $3.075 million from Queensland Treasury Corporation.
"Council's proposal for off-street car parking, as part of an overall plan to improve the safety and amenity of Gallery Walk by alleviating traffic issues, was largely well received during the community and stakeholder engagement process," he said.
"Having secured adequate space for off-street car parking, the boundary realignment and subdivision will maximise Council's disposal of the surplus land, including the portion currently occupied by the winery.
"This 9,615m2 site will still be wholly located within the Minor Tourism zone of the Planning Scheme and offers potential for new development that complements the existing approved use and the surrounding area."
Council acquired the 6.17-hectare property in the heart of the Gallery Walk precinct providing direct vehicle and pedestrian access to Long Road as part of its Strategic Land Purchase Initiative.
Following the sale of the surplus commercial land, Council will have some four hectares remaining for future use.
"With more than 70 bespoke shops and hospitality businesses in one block, Gallery Walk is an important destination for visitors and locals alike and contributes significantly to the local economy," Mayor Christensen said.
"This will be further boosted by improved parking and pedestrian access."
