Be healthy and active s extended run

Scenic Rim residents will be encouraged to embrace a healthier and more active lifestyle, inspired by the sporting spectacular of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games which kicks off today.

It will be Game On! after the Games have ended, with Council's 2018 Be Healthy and Active program - its biggest and best ever - extended beyond April to 30 June.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Game On! will be delivered under the Queensland Government's Embracing 2018 Legacy Program for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games with funding by the Australian Government.

"The excitement of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games has created many great legacies, such as inspiring the Scenic Rim community to get out and get active through the extension of our Be Healthy and Active program this year," he said.

"Under the Game On! banner, many activities offered during the Be Healthy and Active program from February to April will continue from 1 May to 30 June, bringing together people of all ages and abilities.

"It will further encourage our communities to engage in lifelong learning about health and well-being while inspiring us all to have a go at some fantastic free and low-cost activities."

Targeted activities will also be delivered across the Scenic Rim, providing opportunities to build more inclusive, engaged and active communities.

Residents of Beechmont, Rathdowney, Kooralbyn, Kalbar, Mount Alford and Aratula, as well as Boonah, Beaudesert, Canungra and Tamborine Mountain and their surrounding areas will have an opportunity to kick some health and fitness goals in coming months.

Program highlights include mini Commonwealth Games at Boonah and Beaudesert for the under 14s and traditional Indigenous games, for children and adults of all ages and abilities, offering an insight into Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

"This array of affordable activities for all ages and abilities is a gold medal opportunity to embrace a healthier lifestyle and connect with others in the community in the spirit of the Games and Embracing 2018," Cr Christensen said.

"Whether you're eight or 80, this year's program has something for everyone, encouraging not only improved fitness but also stronger community connections, with our region's spectacular scenery and natural environment providing the perfect backdrop for a healthy and active lifestyle."
