Council is working in partnership with individuals and groups committed to preserving the Scenic Rim's green spaces and wildlife habitats, offering environmental grants totalling more than $100,000 to maintain the region's natural values.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Council is now accepting applications for the 2018 Environmental Grants Program which is open to not-for-profit community groups, schools and P&Cs and landowners who are already part of the Land For Wildlife initiative.

"Council recognises the significant contribution by landowners to the conservation and enhancement of the region's natural environment through their participation in Land for Wildlife by maintaining habitats for native animals on private property," he said.

"However, community groups and schools also play an important role through education and awareness programs, weed control and wildlife habitat improvement activities and wildlife conservation.
"Environmental grants have helped members of the Scenic Rim community to protect endangered species such as the bristlebird, glossy black cockatoo and koala as well as vegetation including our unique brigalow scrub and native macadamia trees.

"Scenic Rim is one of the most bio-diverse areas in Australia and maintaining that biodiversity is a partnership between Council and the community."

Environmental Grants applications close on Friday 25 May. Application forms and further information are available on Council's website, www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au or by contacting its Environment Section on 5540 5111.

Environmental officers are happy to assist community members in preparing their grant applications.

"Our Environmental Grants Program represents an investment by Council in conserving and enhancing some of our region's most valuable natural assets, our spectacular scenery and healthy environment," Cr Christensen said.

"It also supports our Biodiversity Strategy which recognises the importance of the ecological balance which is vital for the Scenic Rim's key industries of tourism and agriculture."
