At today's Ordinary Meeting, Councillors voted to nominate Monday, 8 August as the public holiday for the Royal Queensland Show in 2022.

Mayor Greg Christensen said that the nomination would now be made to the Office of Industrial Relations for approval.

"Each year local governments are requested to nominate special and show holidays for the following year in line with the requirements of the Holidays Act 1983," he said.

"Today's nomination means we will put this date forward in writing and wait for approval from the Queensland Government.

"It's also a good time to remind our community that the Scenic Rim region will mark this year's Royal Queensland Show with a public holiday on Monday, 9 August 2021.

"After the cancellation of the Ekka last year, we are hoping for all the organisers and many attendees that the event can go ahead this year.

"The Ekka is a fabulous opportunity to bring the country to the city, and we know many of our local farmers and producers are involved in the event."

Traditionally the Scenic Rim has marked the Royal Queensland Show on the Monday of the Ekka week to avoid holding the holiday on the same day as Brisbane residents. This provides economic benefits for our businesses who remain open for the Brisbane visitors who may choose to visit the Scenic Rim on their gazetted holiday.

"While we are confident many of our community members enjoy marking the public holiday on a Monday, we believe it's time seek some community feedback on the preferred day of the week for the holiday," Cr Christensen.

"Later this year, we will undertake consultation using the 'Have your say' feature on our website, to gauge community feedback for Royal Queensland Show Day holidays for the Scenic Rim region from 2023 and beyond."
