Council's waste management strategy aims to reduce landfill

From today, Scenic Rim Regional Council is calling for community feedback on how waste and resource recovery is managed in the future.

Mayor Greg Christensen said the Draft Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 2021-2026 includes clear targets, actions and priorities.

"In 2019-20, we processed 31,645 tonnes of waste at our landfill including waste from our seven waste facilities, and this strategy aims to increase recycling and resource recovery and reduce the quantity of waste that goes to landfill," he said.

"We are driving improvement in waste management and resource recovery, and with the support of our communities, the Scenic Rim has achieved an enviable environmental record in waste management.

"Our kerbside mixed recyclables collection continues to have a low contamination rate, enabling a high percentage of plastic, paper, glass and metals to be reprocessed, reused or recycled.

"We always strive to do better, and the support and action from all residents and businesses is critical to success.

"Our Waste Strategy will set the direction for detailed future plans relating to services, infrastructure and information for our community.

"We are encouraging community members and businesses to read through the draft Strategy on Council's website and provide feedback to create a cleaner and greener region.

"We will also be holding sessions for the community to find out more about the strategy and ask Council officers questions."

The Draft Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 2021-2026 is available on Council's website or in hard copy from Council's Customer Service and Administration Centres in Beaudesert, Boonah and Tamborine Mountain.
