Check out the tech at Council's libraries

Scenic Rim library users have been invited to check out the new technology that is making borrowing books even easier.

Mayor Greg Christensen said the introduction of self-serve checkouts at Boonah, Beaudesert and Tamborine Mountain Libraries was yet another way in which Scenic Rim libraries are helping members of the community to connect with technology.

"Libraries are about supporting literacy and, increasingly, this means digital literacy," he said.

"Today, digital literacy is just as important as the ability to read and write.

"The new scanners provide members of the community with another means of interacting with technology in a safe environment and gaining greater independence as well as streamlining their borrowing by being able to bypass the queue when checking out books."

Library customers need only scan their library card and the books they wish to borrow, take their receipt and go.

While children have been quick to click with the technology, some older members of the community have been reluctant to use the new scanners.

"We would love people to have a go, and the librarians are only too happy to show their customers how to use the technology," Cr Christensen said.

"It's really very user friendly."

Library customers who have reserved items or who wish to borrow CDs or DVDs will still need to see library staff to check out their items.

"The introduction of the self-checkout facility represents another investment by Council in healthy, engaged and resourceful communities," Cr Christensen said.

"Importantly, our librarians will continue to be there to help their customers with their borrowing needs."
