Project to ignite community spirit for Games

Scenic Rim community groups are being invited to contribute designs for a series of sculptural beacons which are set to form a centerpiece of local celebrations in towns and villages during the Commonwealth Games.

The sculptural fire and light beacons will be used during the Fires on Top of Mountains cultural program, being held to coincide with the 2018 games on the Gold Coast, and also represent the next stage of the Scenic Rim Story Marker Project.

"Successful designs will be fabricated into 2.4-metre high steel cylinders which will be illuminated from within by LED lights during local community celebrations," Mayor Greg Christensen said.

"After the end of the Games, the beacons will be installed as permanent public art works across the region, contributing to the outcomes of the Story Marker Project as a legacy of the Commonwealth Games

"This initiative seeks to create a tourist trail of way-finding installation art linking the communities of the region from east to west along the Scenic Rim Way."

The region's first story marker - The Bower - has been installed in the new Rhoda Rushbrook Park on Gallery Walk, Tamborine Mountain. The next story marker - entitled Strata Canungra - will soon be erected in Christie St near the Canungra School of Arts Hall.

"These community beacons will further complement these first two major art pieces as part of the emerging tourist trail through the communities of our region," Cr Christensen said.

"Importantly, we are looking for contemporary designs which are anchored in the sense of place within our community, designs which creatively interpret the unique identity and personality of our places and people."
