Election material a sign of the times

13 November: With the State election campaign in full swing, promotional materials for candidates are appearing across the Scenic Rim.

Council has provided all candidates standing for election with information relating to the correct design and placement of outdoor promotional materials on Council-controlled areas and roads.

This information has been provided via email to the addresses listed on their nomination form lodged with the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) or their campaign websites. The ECQ Returning Officer for the Scenic Rim electorate has also been provided with a copy of Council's Election Signage Fact Sheet.

Election material erected by or on behalf of candidates which breaches signage guidelines will be removed and impounded by Council officers in line with Council local laws.

This includes signs attached to trees or road infrastructure; signs placed on public lands or council-controlled roadsides without local law approval; multiple signs on one property; and oversized signs or banners which require building and/or planning approval.

Placement of election signage beside State-controlled roads is covered by separate guidelines and candidates are advised to refer to the Queensland Government Roadside Advertising Guide at www.tmr.qld.gov.au (search Roadside Advertising Guide) for advice.

All signage must also be removed within two days of the conclusion of the election. Council's Election Signage Fact Sheet can also be downloaded from www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/local-laws

People are also asked to respect the election materials of candidates as a part of the democratic process. Malicious damage or theft of signage and materials should be reported to the police. Members of the public concerned about the placement of election material in their area should contact Council's Compliance section on 5540 5111.
