Healthy and active in 2018

It's Game On! with the Commonwealth Games challenging Scenic Rim residents to embrace a healthier and more active lifestyle through Council's 2018 Be Healthy and Active program.

Mayor Greg Christensen said the colour and excitement of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games should inspire residents of all ages and abilities to get out and get active by participating in a range of free and low-cost activities.

"The Commonwealth Games is more than competitive sport at an elite level," he said.

"As the friendly games, it offers the opportunity to meet as well as compete - much like our Be Healthy and Active program.

"With an array of affordable activities, Be Healthy and Active is about strengthening community connections while encouraging individual fitness across all age groups and abilities.

"Whether you're eight or 80, this year's program has something for everyone."

The most diverse range of indoor and outdoor activities ever offered by Council, the 2018 Be Healthy and Active program from February through April includes everything from aqua fitness to Zumba as well as tips for healthy eating and chair yoga for those with mobility issues.

To encourage Scenic Rim residents to get into the spirit of the sporting spectacular of the Commonwealth Games, this year's Be Healthy and Active program offers participants the chance to win one of five $100 vouchers by obtaining a Games Card to go into a prize draw.

Be Healthy and Active participants will also be able to share their journey towards a more active and healthy lifestyle through #BEHEALTHYANDACTIVE.

"Our region's spectacular scenery and natural environment and our public places and spaces provide the perfect backdrop for a healthy and active lifestyle," Cr Christensen said.

"Incorporating moderate exercise into your day will boost your physical health, increase your energy levels and improve your ability to deal with the stresses of everyday life as physical activity can help increase the level of 'feel good' chemicals in your brain.

"I encourage everyone to go for gold by striving for a healthier and more active lifestyle in 2018."

The complete program guide will be available from Council's Customer Contact Centres and Scenic Rim Libraries from 22 January or can be downloaded from Council's website, www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/healthy-and-active-community
