Scenic Rim Regional Council has appointed Mr Jon Gibbons as its next Chief Executive Officer, following a Special Meeting yesterday.

Describing himself as "a country kid at heart", Mr Gibbons has spent his entire career working in rural and regional Australia and brings to the Scenic Rim extensive experience in local government.

Mayor Greg Christensen said Mr Gibbons was a former Chief Executive Officer of Carpentaria Shire Council in Normanton and was Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Whitsunday Regional Council during the local government amalgamations of 2008.

"Mr Gibbons also brings to Scenic Rim Regional Council extensive local government experience in environmental issues; development assessment; regulatory services; parks, gardens and waste management; and environmental health and building certification as a former Director of Health and Environment at Bowen Shire Council," he said.

"Most recently, he was the CEO of the Administration of Norfolk Island in the South Pacific during a challenging period of transition.

"Across all his previous roles, Mr Gibbons has demonstrated his ability to deal with difficult issues while still commanding the respect of his peers, employees and communities.

"He is well credentialled, with a Master of Business Administration (Local Government), a Graduate Diploma of Local Government Management, a Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning, and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health)."

With a personal connection to the region - his wife, Jeanette grew up at Beechmont - Mr Gibbons feels very much at home in the Scenic Rim and will take up his new appointment in March.

"This style of living and working suits me down to the ground," he said.

"I am looking forward to working hard and building firm partnerships with Council and the community."
