Moogerah Master Plan to Enhance Lake Access and Amenity

Seqwater and Scenic Rim Regional Council are progressing plans that will enhance the recreational facilities and improve public safety at Lake Moogerah.

The extension of the current day use area and overnight camping at Moogerah Caravan Park will be the first step towards a long-term vision for the site that will include Seqwater's creation of a new designated swimming area to improve public safety.

Increasing the accessibility and amenity of this popular recreational area will require the removal of 39 cabins located in the dam's flood margin.

Seqwater Acting Chief Executive Officer Dan Spiller and Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Seqwater and Council were committed to working in partnership to maximise the tourism and economic benefits of Lake Moogerah for Scenic Rim residents and visitors to the region.

“With more than 150,000 visitors a year, Lake Moogerah is already one of our most popular lakes in South East Queensland and a major drawcard for the Scenic Rim region,” Mr Spiller said.

“We fully support Council’s plans to progress a long-term vision for the Lake Moogerah Caravan Park which will see the area become accessible to more Scenic Rim residents and visitors to the region.

“And as part of improving recreational facilities and public safety at Lake Moogerah, Seqwater will be establishing a new designated swimming area before next summer.”

Creation of this new swimming cove will involve relocating and expanding the existing swimming area away from the boat ramps immediately in front of the caravan park, in line with a range of new designated swimming areas at South East Queensland lakes following a safety review by Surf Life Saving Queensland.

Progression of the overall master plan will not only improve amenity as well as safety for Moogerah Lake users, but also the safety of those who have occupied cabins within the flood plain margin of the dam which has been impacted by flooding during two extreme weather events in the past five years.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Council’s plans for the long-term use of the site would allow the current day use area of the caravan park to be extended and additional sites for overnight camping to be created.

“Lake Moogerah is a key tourism drawcard for the Scenic Rim region and Council and Seqwater are committed to developing the site to benefit all Scenic Rim residents and the wider community,” he said.

“The termination of site occupation licences in the flood zone will enable Council and Seqwater to redevelop the area so that it can be enjoyed by many and not just a select few.

“By notifying site occupiers now of the need to vacate the area by 30 June, Council and Seqwater have endeavoured to provide as much notice as possible, allowing site occupiers to use their sites over the recent summer holidays and coming Easter school holidays.”
