Cottages are in Keeping with Canungra's Charm

Canungra's unique charm was considered by Council in approving a development permit for three new single-storey cottages pitched at older residents aiming to downsize.

The proposed development on Appel Street incorporates three low-maintenance dwellings which have been designed to complement an existing character cottage on the site, as well as the character of the street, which includes commercial and residential properties.

Planning and Development Committee Chair, Cr Rick Stanfield, said the development was in keeping with Canungra's rural heritage and country town atmosphere.

"Many of us choose to live in the Scenic Rim because we enjoy its relaxed living and rural lifestyle," he said.

"However, the reality of downsizing affects many of us at some stage and housing such as this enables older members of the community to continue to live within familiar surroundings, enjoying easy access to local amenities and services.

"The cottages are designed to be low-maintenance, without the upkeep of a large lot, which will appeal to many older residents who enjoy independent living and the charm of a country town."

Conditions have been put in place by Council to ensure the proposed cottages with additional car parking spaces contained within the lot are only accessed by Appel Street and not via Lawton Lane.
