Resilient Women 2021

Council is partnering with Making Good Alliance with support from Women of the World Festival (WOW) Australia to deliver a two-day Resilient Women event on Tamborine Mountain this October to empower and inspire women in regional areas.

Scenic Rim Division 3 Councillor Virginia West said the Resilient Women event on 22-23 October is an uplifting, collaborative event where women can network and discuss the issues they face in their daily lives in a creative and supportive environment.

"This unique program is jam-packed with a variety of events ranging from panel discussions, presentations, meditation, creative art workshops, story time, singing performances and a night market," Cr West said.

"After last year's cancellation of Brisbane's Women of the World Festival due to COVID-19 restrictions, Queensland has hosted a number of events called WOW Think Ins, designed for women in regional areas to hold conversations about the issues facing their communities.

"We were delighted to have hosted two WOW Think Ins in the Scenic Rim, one on Tamborine Mountain in November last year, and another in association with the Women's Work Exhibition at The Centre Beaudesert in February.

"Event organisers identified from those WOW Think Ins that Scenic Rim women want and need a safe space to connect and talk about issues such as homelessness, financial security, women in leadership and politics, and how to help people going through domestic violence.

"This upcoming Resilient Women event on Tamborine Mountain addresses a number of these topics and is designed to raise our women up and give them the tools they need to overcome obstacles in their life, and the lives of their family and friends.

"We have some incredible guest speakers and organisations featured in the two-day program and I encourage women of all ages to come along and join in the conversations and workshops," she said.

This Resilient Women event on Tamborine Mountain kickstarts with an Resilient Women Arts Dinner on the Friday night 22 October. The Arts Dinner will celebrate and explore the things that make and shape resilient women and girls and is headlined by Mununjali/Wiradjuri artist Kim Walmsley, artist Colleen Lavender, photographer Carin Garland, Outland Denim Co-Founder Erica Bartle and award-winning singer Clea.

On Saturday 23 October the Resilient Women program runs from 9am until 9pm with health and wellness activities, a wide range of workshops so participants can unleash their creative spirit, and information sessions with community and advocacy organisations.

One unique event called 'Borrow a Resilient Woman' is on at the Tamborine Mountain Library on Saturday 23 October from 9.30am until 12 noon. Attendees will be able to 'book' a resilient woman and ask her questions to find out how they have achieved their goals. The Resilient Women involved include professionals, immigrants, poets, archaeologists and artists and more.

Key discussions on the program will include:

  • What does Resilient Leadership look like.
  • Be someone who does something bystander workshop.
  • Economic and financial security for women – Your questions answered.
  • What does the future hold for women and girls.

Tamborine Mountain venues involved include the Vonda Youngman Centre, the Making Good Alliance's Centre for Regenerative Art, and also the Tamborine Mountain Library.
