Council investigations continue on Beaudesert Pig & Calf Saleyards

The Scenic Rim Regional Council acknowledges the value of a small livestock sale to the Beaudesert community and the impact of Council's decision to not renew the lease for the now heritage-listed Beaudesert Pig and Calf Saleyards.

Findings from a preliminary independent engineering report highlighted concerns with a number compliance issues. Detailed investigations are continuing to provide the information required to make an informed decision with regard to the future of the facility.

Council is also seeking clarity on the implications of the recent heritage listing on future upgrades, improvements and ongoing maintenance, and on the ongoing operation of pig and calf sales and associated leasing arrangements.

Mayor Greg Christensen said that it is a balancing act between Council's commitment to preserve the region's rich heritage and character while meeting its legal obligations to address modern environmental, safety and animal welfare compliance requirements.

“We don’t want to give the community false hope; a decision on the saleyards' future leasing capabilities will be made once all information relating to the facility's compliance and the implications of the heritage listing are known,” he said.

"The decision on the current lease was not made lightly and we understand the community’s disappointment.

"Council’s appeal of the heritage listing to the Planning and Environment Court will be reviewed as soon as more information is available, and withdrawn if appropriate," Cr Christensen said.
