Mununjali stories celebrated
Stories of the Scenic Rim's Mununjali people are being celebrated through a pop-up window display in Beaudesert CBD.
Stories of several well-known families from Beaudesert's Mununjali people feature in the display, which has been curated by Council in collaboration with the community.
The display is on Telemon Street in the vacant shopfront between Beds R Us and the Department of Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre Beaudesert.
Panels in the exhibition, included with the permission of family members and participants, are from Council's 2015 Black Diggers exhibition and 2016 Kinship exhibition.
Mununjali Elder Aunty Roslyn Yuke, whose late mother Joyce Yuke features in the display, said it was a meaningful tribute to the Mununjali people of Beaudesert.
"We're very proud of our history, and to see the old photos of the kids brings back lots of great memories of growing up in Petersen Street," she said.
"We'll always remember our Mununjali history, our culture, our land and our families - that's what it's all about."
Division 4 Councillor Michael Enright thanked the Mununjali people for their contributions.
"The Mununjali people of Beaudesert, whose culture is strong and enduring to this day, are an important part of our town's social fabric and our regional identity," he said.
"To see so many Mununjali families featured in this display is deeply meaningful for our region, and I encourage everyone to stop by and take a look."
Mayor Greg Christensen said it was important to recognise and celebrate the traditional owners of the lands across the Scenic Rim during NAIDOC Week and beyond.
"Every day of every week of every year, it is fitting to recognise and celebrate the important roles the traditional owners of the lands across the Scenic Rim continue to play," he said.
