Trash could be treasure on Garage Sale Trail

There's still time for Scenic Rim residents to jump on the Garage Sale Trail bandwagon and turn their trash to cash while helping to save the environment this month.

Scenic Rim is among 150 councils across Australia encouraging residents to be part of the greatest ever garage sale on the weekend of 21 and 22 October and Mayor Greg Christensen could well be among the bargain hunters.

"Last year, more than 320,000 Australians hit the Garage Sale Trail, with more than two million items listed for sale, $3.9 million changing hands across the country and the average seller making $379," he said.

"However, buying and selling at garage sales goes beyond making some extra cash or bagging a bargain, it's a fantastic opportunity for people to get out and meet their neighbours.

"Importantly, the environment is a big winner from the Garage Sale Trail, with tonnes of unwanted items which might otherwise find their way into landfill being reused and recycled."

Scenic Rim sellers at Beechmont, Tamborine Mountain, Canungra, Boyland, Beaudesert, Boonah, Mount Alford and Dugandan have already registered their garage sales.

"It's often said that one man's trash is another man's treasure and the Garage Sale Trail is an opportunity for us all to rethink our idea of waste," Cr Christensen said.

"All too often clothes, furniture, books and quality household items are dumped when they could easily be diverted from landfills and reused and recycled."

Residents without internet access who would like to sign up for the Garage Sale Trail can contact Council's Waste Education Officer on 5540 5111.

"For very little effort, you can make a big difference to the environment, and possibly help someone find something they have always wanted," Cr Christensen said.
