Community breaks ground on groundbreaking project

Members of Tamborine Mountain's business community have joined Council in turning the first sod of the groundbreaking Village Greens project.

Mayor Greg Christensen and Councillors Nigel Waistell, Virginia West and Michael Enright marked the start of works on the Main Street revitalisation with business operators Darren Jack, Gina Storey and Judi Minnikin along with landscape architect John Mongard, whose town centre master plans for Boonah, Beaudesert and Tamborine Mountain were recently judged Australia's best.

"Reaching this exciting milestone in the delivery of this project has been a journey of more than two years, involving a number of rounds of community consultation and feedback from business operators and residents to shape our planning," Cr Christensen said.

"Since late 2015, Council has worked with the community to determine residents' aspirations for an area which is very much at the heart of the Tamborine Mountain community.

"Through written submissions, stakeholder workshops and community forums, members of the Tamborine Mountain community have had the opportunity to contribute to the planning process at a number of stages.

"Indeed, following feedback from a community forum in March, the final plans for the Village Greens were revised to take account of community needs and expectations and the Mountain's unique character and environment."

Cr Christensen said co-funding of the Village Greens project by Council and the State Government represented an investment that would deliver economic and social benefits for the community and the wider Scenic Rim region.

"Vibrant towns and villages are central to our region's sustainable and prosperous economy," he said.

The Village Greens project is to be completed by April 2018, when the eyes of the Commonwealth and the world will be on the Scenic Rim when the Queen's Baton Relay takes in Tamborine Mountain.
