Council approves offering assistance for Scenic Rim’s flood-affected ratepayers

Scenic Rim residents and business operators suffering financial hardship as a result of the recent torrential rain and flooding may be eligible for rates assistance from Council until June next year.

At its Ordinary Meeting today, Council approved a concession to defer rates payments by residents and local businesses directly impacted by south east Queensland’s flood disaster of 22 February to 7 March 2022.

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the concession for those eligible will apply to the second rates levy of the 2021-2022 financial year, as well as both levies for 2022-2023, effectively extending the rates discount period until 30 June 2023.

“Council recognises that ratepayers in some parts of the Scenic Rim have suffered substantial financial loss and damage in this most recent disaster to impact our region,” he said.

“Although the floodwaters have receded and we are now into the recovery phase, families and businesses struggling to return normality can be assured that help is at hand for those needing assistance with meeting rates payments.

“Similar arrangements were put in place for those suffering financial hardship following the Black Summer bushfires in late 2019 and early 2020 and Council’s assistance to flood-affected ratepayers is in addition to the disaster recovery funding being offered by the Queensland and Australian governments.”

The rates concession will be available only until 30 June 2023 and applicants must meet the conditions required by Council.

“Those struggling in the wake of the recent extreme rainfall and flooding need to know that support is available,” Cr Christensen said.

“I encourage residents and business operators who are seeking rates assistance to make direct contact with Council to discuss their situation.”
