New Policy Unlocks the Key to the Region

Council has formalised its recognition of outstanding individuals and the contribution of community groups to the Scenic Rim, with the adoption of a policy which includes the award of the Key to the Region.

In addition to the existing Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards - which are to be announced next month - the Honours and Recognition Policy outlines the criteria for awarding a Recognition Plaque, Freedom of Entry or Key to the Region.

Corporate and Community Services Committee Chair Cr Virginia West said the policy represented a formal framework to recognise significant contributions to the community, the development and promotion of the region and the outstanding achievements of individuals and community groups with a Scenic Rim connection.

"The policy will allow formal tiers of recognition, with a Key to the Region presented at a civic reception being the most distinguished and significant honour to be conferred by Council," she said.

"Significant relationships with military units based in the Scenic Rim will also be acknowledged through Freedom of Entry to a town or village in the region."

A panel, comprising Council's Chief Executive Officer or Acting Chief Executive Officer, the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Cr Michael Enright and Cr Duncan McInnes, will be tasked with recommending recognition and honours to be conferred by Council.

"This policy aligns with those of other local governments," Cr West said.

"Community members wishing to see honours conferred should contact their local Councillors.

"Most nominations would be within the scope of the Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards which celebrate the outstanding work of individuals and community groups in our region."
